The Red Sea Star, also known as Red Starfish and belonging to the Fromia genus, showcases various shades of red. Both the Red Sea Star and the Red & Black Sea Star exhibit multiple black pores (dots) on their surface, while the Red & Black Sea Star additionally features black tips on its arms.
Typically solitary in nature, the Red Sea Star can coexist with others of its species if the aquarium is large enough to support multiple individuals. It thrives in a mature tank with ample algae, being relatively self-sufficient as it scavenges micro-organisms and detritus, especially in the presence of live rock. Active during the day, it is diurnal in behavior.
The Red Sea Star is highly sensitive to sudden changes in oxygen levels, salinity, and pH in the water. It is also intolerant of copper-based medications. To facilitate a smooth transition, the drip acclimation method is highly recommended for all Sea Stars, and it should never be exposed to air during handling.
Breeding the Red Sea Star in an aquarium is extremely challenging, as there are no distinguishing characteristics to differentiate between males and females.
In case of insufficient algae growth in the aquarium, the diet should be supplemented with flaked foods, small pieces of fish, or mussel to ensure its nutritional needs are met.
