The Flame Hawk can add good color to many aquariums. These fish can be good additions to many aquariums and are hardy enough to be adored by beginners and long-time marine enthusiasts alike. The Flame Hawk is one of the more colorful Hawk species. Although they may nip at smaller fish, and crustaceans, many people have kept them in reef environments with success. Flame Hawk Fish tend to do well in community aquariums, though again, they may eat crustaceans. Flame Hawks do not have swim bladders and will perch motionless for long periods of time on substrate, rock, or coral. They will dart to another perch, toward food, or away from perceived danger with amazing speed when so inclined. A hardy fish, the Flame Hawk is often easily acclimated to captivity. Most begin eating with little encouragement. These fish rarely carry many parasites and are usually quite resistant to disease. Flame Hawks are said to recognize human keepers, and may wait near the surface for food at the approach of a familiar person. A mature Flame Hawk Fish is a dark red color. These fish average lengths of three inches. Flame Hawks have rather stocky bodies and squared caudal fins.
The Flame Hawk gets along fairly well with other fishes, but may act aggressively towards other bottom-dwelling species. In a small aquarium this may present a problem, so either avoid other bottom-dwellers, or provide this fish with plenty of room and hiding places to ease territorial conflicts. |
