The mesmerizing Green Canary Blenny (Meiacanthus tongaensis) bears a resemblance to the Meiacanthus oualanensis species. It showcases a stunning green head with a distinctive black stripe along its dorsal fin. What truly captivates observers is its remarkable ability to "hover" in the water, gracefully darting and swiftly stopping as it navigates the reef aquarium. During breeding, males undergo a series of color changes, adding further intrigue to their appearance.
To ensure the well-being of the Green Canary Blenny, a minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended, along with the presence of live rock that provides opportunities for hunting and grazing. It is advisable to keep only one blenny per tank, unless maintaining a breeding pair. In the face of aggression from other fish, the Green Canary Blenny will defend itself by biting the inside of the attacker's mouth.
It is important to exercise caution when keeping the Green Canary Blenny, as it is considered venomous. If children have access to the tank, special care should be taken to avoid any accidental interactions that may result in a painful bite, as the blenny may perceive fingers as a threat. However, they typically resort to biting only when they are consumed by larger fish, aiming to escape by biting the inside of the predator's mouth.
The diet of the Canary Blenny should primarily consist of finely chopped crustacean flesh, mysis shrimp, and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp. Additionally, incorporating frozen herbivore preparations into their feeding routine is beneficial.
