The Flameback Angelfish, also referred to as the African Pygmy Angelfish or Orangeback Angelfish, exhibits a striking color contrast of blue and orange-yellow hues. The body of this species is primarily blue, with a bright and broad orange to yellow band that extends from the head along the back to the tip of the dorsal fin. The caudal fin is yellow and translucent, allowing for easy differentiation from the Brazilian Flameback Angelfish (also known as the Fireball Angelfish - Centropyge aurantonotus).

A 55 gallon tank or larger with plenty of hiding places and live rock for grazing is recommended for the Flameback Angelfish. It may occasionally nip at certain SPS and polyp coral species in the reef aquarium.

The diet of the Flameback Angelfish should include a mix of Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis or frozen shrimp, and other meaty foods.
