The Black Velvet Angelfish, also referred to as the Gray Poma, showcases a predominantly black body with a distinctive gray patch on its head and the upper half of its body. A striking yellow outline adorns its tail and the posterior tip of the dorsal fin.

This species tends to be quite timid and might pose a challenge when acclimatizing to new environments. To ensure its well-being, it requires a tank of at least 50 gallons, complete with numerous hiding spots. While not ideal for reef tanks due to its tendency to nip at stony and soft corals, as well as clam mantles, it can thrive in a carefully designed environment.

One intriguing aspect of the Black Velvet Angelfish is its hermaphroditic nature, making it extremely difficult to differentiate between males and females based on their coloration.

Maintaining a balanced diet is crucial for this species. Its preferred food includes Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, shrimp, and other meaty foods. Additionally, providing live rock in the tank allows it to graze on filamentous algae and diatoms, contributing to its overall well-being.
