The Lantern Bass is a Caribbean fish that belongs to the smaller bass species and is ideal for beginner aquarists. Its body has brown, black, and orange markings, and is elongated in shape. This fish is highly disease-resistant, but it should not be kept in an aquarium with small fish or shrimp. To keep a Lantern Bass, a 30-gallon saltwater aquarium with live rocks for hiding is recommended. They can be aggressive towards smaller fish, so it is advisable to add multiple specimens at the same time. Lantern Bass do not harm corals or sessile invertebrates, making them suitable for reef aquariums that do not house small fish or shrimp.

This hardy fish needs a varied diet consisting of chopped meaty items, vitamin-enriched brine, mysis shrimp, and flake foods.
