The Red-spot Cardinalfish is commonly found in large groups on rocky reefs with strong currents, ranging from 2-12 meters (6.6-39ft) in depth. This delicate species requires careful acclimatization and is best suited to a mature reef aquarium with live rock and plenty of shaded areas for hiding. Efficient filtration with areas of brisk water movement and some calmer resting spots out of the current is essential for their well-being.

Red-spot Cardinalfish prefer shoaling and should be kept in small groups of at least 5-7 specimens. It is essential to ensure tankmates are peaceful and non-intimidating, and not of a large or carnivorous species, which may prevent the cardinals from feeding. This species is not a threat towards other small fishes and crustaceans.

Breeding of the Red-spot Cardinalfish has not yet been achieved in captivity. During courtship and spawning, this species forms distinct pairs. After spawning, the male fish carries and incubates the egg mass in its mouth until hatching. The larvae are released into the water and develop for several weeks before settling down from the plankton. No further parental care is given to the offspring after their release.

Red-spot Cardinalfish are active during the evening/night, and blue moon lighting can enable you to observe their behavior closely after switching off the main tank lights. They require a well-balanced diet, including Mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped krill, and other meaty items. Small amounts should be fed three times a day, with at least one of the feeds after lights out.
