Springeri Damsel (Chrysiptera cf. springeri)
Max Size: 2 inches
Diet: Carnivore
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatible: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
The Blue Sapphire Damselfish is native to Indonesia and is recognized by its striking blue coloration and black outlined fins. This species can quickly turn completely black when stressed, allowing them to avoid predators. However, like many damselfish in the Chrysiptera genus, they can become aggressive towards slower-moving tank mates. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the aquarium has plenty of live rock for territories and hiding.
This damselfish is a hardy species and a great choice for beginners. It is also compatible with corals and invertebrates, making it an ideal companion fish for a saltwater aquarium of over 30 gallons. However, as the fish matures, it may become more aggressive towards other species of fish added to the aquarium. If keeping with other damselfish, providing plenty of live rock with multiple hiding places will help break up territories and decrease aggression.
The Blue Sapphire Damselfish's diet should include quality flake foods, frozen meaty foods like brine or mysis shrimp, and occasionally dried seaweed offered on a feeding clip.
