The Yellowtail Damselfish is a resilient and beautifully colored fish that is highly sought after by aquarists, both novice and experienced. Chrysiptera parasema is particularly prized because its bright blue body is set off by a vivid yellow tail, creating a stunning contrast against a backdrop of corals and live rock. What sets this species apart is its lower aggression level and smaller tank requirements compared to other damselfish.

Found in the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Yellowtail Damselfish prefers a peaceful environment with plenty of hiding spots and mild-mannered tankmates. While they generally coexist peacefully with other fish, invertebrates, and corals, some individuals can become territorial towards their own species or similarly sized fish. To ensure a harmonious tank, it's best to keep them in odd-numbered groups of suitable size.

Also known as the Yellowtail Blue Damselfish or Yellowtail Demoiselle, this species feeds on algae and zooplankton in the aquarium, but should be given a varied diet of meaty foods such as vitamin-enriched and mysis shrimp to ensure optimal health. It is recommended to feed them multiple small meals throughout the day.

Yellowtail Damsels have been successfully bred in captivity. Sexing them can be challenging, but males are usually bigger and more slender than females. When ready to mate, males become aggressive towards females, but ultimately take on the responsibility of guarding and caring for the eggs. During this time, they become extremely territorial and protective.
