The Half & Half Wrasse, scientifically named Hemigymnus melapterus, goes by several monikers including Banner Wrasse and Black Edge Thick Lip. Notably, it falls into the category of challenging-to-keep species and is subject to restrictions. This fish boasts a distinctive appearance with a dual-toned composition. Its anterior half showcases a light silver-gray shade, while the posterior half is cloaked in velvety black. Initial adaptation to captivity often proves problematic as it exhibits finicky eating habits.
Despite its temperament, the Half & Half Wrasse might exhibit peaceful behavior towards other fish, and its overall hardiness is moderate. When considering its habitat, this species is more inclined to seek refuge within coral branches rather than concealing itself under sand. However, it's crucial to note that the Half & Half Wrasse is not compatible with reef environments.
Juvenile specimens of this wrasse display captivating colors, although these hues tend to fade with age. Initially, their coloration boasts dark green and black hues towards the posterior region, transitioning to an almost white shade towards the anterior portion. Interestingly, juveniles measuring under approximately 8 cm showcase a vibrant yellow tail that gradually dulls as they grow. A unique transformation occurs as pink and blue facial markings around the eyes of juveniles expand to encompass the entire head of mature adults.
In fish-only systems, the Half & Half Wrasse plays a role in keeping the sandbed stirred. Careful handling is essential during transportation due to its delicate nature, as it proves highly challenging to maintain within an aquarium. If introduced to a tank, it's advisable for the Half & Half Wrasse to be the sole representative of its species present.
