The Desjardini Sailfin Tang, also known as the Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang, Desjardin's Sailfin Tang, or Red Sea Sailfin Tang, boasts a captivating coloration ranging from dark to very light gray. Its nose displays light freckles, while the abdomen features charming yellow freckles. The body is adorned with several vertical yellow stripes of varying sizes, and intricate markings grace the face between the stripes. A striking blue tail with white freckles adds to its allure. Remarkably, this Tang can practically double its size at will by raising or lowering its sizable dorsal and anal fins.
To accommodate the active nature of the Desjardini Sailfin Tang, a spacious 180-gallon or larger aquarium is essential, providing ample room for swimming. Although it can be aggressive towards its own species and conspecifics on occasion, it usually exhibits peaceful behavior towards other fish. Hence, it's best to keep only one specimen unless in an exceptionally large tank. This Tang primarily consumes filamentous algae.
To maintain the health and well-being of Tangs, it's crucial to offer them a balanced diet. While they will eat meaty foods alongside other fish in the aquarium, marine-based seaweed and algae are essential to strengthen their immune system, reduce aggression, and improve overall health. You can provide dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip, ensuring they have access to these important nutrients at least 3 times per week. Excellent products like Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, and Ocean Nutrition are ideal for this purpose and are user-friendly.
Please take note: Juvenile Desjardini Tangs may lack spots on their fins or body, appearing quite similar to Sailfin Tangs. However, with age, the spots will develop, along with the bold striping on their fins and body, distinguishing them as Desjardini Sailfin Tangs.
