The Red Goatfish, scientifically known as Parupeneus multifasciatus or commonly referred to as the Manybar Goatfish, boasts a distinctive appearance characterized by its black and red body, divided by a prominent cream-colored stripe and subtle black markings. Much like its fellow goatfish counterparts, the Red Goatfish possesses peculiar beard-like extensions called "barbels" that hang from its lower lip, serving as essential tools for sifting through the sand in search of sustenance.
When it comes to caring for these unique aquatic creatures, it requires a degree of attention but can be managed without undue complexity. To ensure their well-being, a spacious tank of at least 100 gallons is recommended, providing ample room for unhindered swimming. It's crucial to furnish the tank with a sandy substrate to facilitate the Red Goatfish's natural foraging behavior, where they employ their barbels to sift through the sand in quest of nourishment. Remarkably, their sand-sifting activity can prove beneficial to the tank's overall ecosystem. Ideally, these fish should be housed with non-aggressive tankmates to ensure a harmonious aquatic environment.
As for their dietary preferences, the Red Goatfish is an unapologetic carnivore. Their menu consists of a variety of fare, including crustaceans, clams, and worms. Additionally, they readily accept frozen meaty offerings like brine or mysis shrimp. To maintain their health and vitality, it is advisable to feed them three to four times a day, ensuring they receive an adequate and balanced diet.
