The Red Mangrove Tree, belonging to the genus Rhizophora, thrives in the upper intertidal waters of tropical oceans worldwide. Reproduction occurs through the formation of hazelnut-sized seeds or propagules, which are dropped from the tree and rooted. The hardier propagule form is the one we offer for aquariums. It measures approximately 6 to 8 inches in length and resembles a candle.
We ensure that the Mangroves we provide are without leaves, ready for planting. Unlike less expensive mangroves that are offered as tubers and challenging to germinate and grow, our propagules are more reliable and successful.
To plant the Red Mangrove, you can choose either the sand or between rocks in an open-topped aquarium, illuminated sump, or refugium. The roots quickly establish themselves in sand substrate or live rock. For proper illumination, position the plants under side light from a metal halide or directly under fluorescents with a light spectrum between 6000°-8000°K.
Mangroves play a crucial role in nutrient absorption from the water, helping reduce nitrates and phosphates in the aquarium. They export unnecessary nutrients and excess salt through their leaves. To maintain nutrient control, it's essential to remove dropped leaves promptly and avoid letting them decay in the aquarium.
This species of mangrove is versatile and can thrive in fresh, brackish, and saltwater environments. They even suit ponds in Southern States, where freezing temperatures are not a concern. When planting, ensure the leaves remain above water. They can also be potted and kept as house plants, provided they receive sufficient moisture and fertilizer.
To care for these plants, occasionally wipe excess salt from the leaves with fresh water and trim the growth tip to manage their growth. Regularly adding an iron supplement and trace elements will benefit their health and development. With proper care, the Red Mangrove Tree can be a captivating and beneficial addition to your aquarium or home.
