Spiny Box Pufferfish (Chilomycterus schoepfi)
Max Size: 10 inches
Diet: Carnivore
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatible: No
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
The Spiny Box Puffer, also known as the Web Burrfish, boasts a unique appearance with its tan to yellow body adorned with dark spots and short, fixed spines that provide protection from larger, more aggressive fish. Its teeth are fused to form a beak-like structure.
To accommodate this puffer's needs, a 180-gallon or larger aquarium is recommended, especially one that is dedicated to housing fish and provides ample room for swimming. While it may nip at slow-moving and long-finned fish, it generally gets along well with others in its own family. However, caution should be exercised in a reef tank, as it may consume invertebrates found there.
In terms of its diet, the Spiny Box Puffer requires a varied selection of meaty foods such as squid, krill, clams, and hard-shelled shrimp. These food items are crucial in helping wear down its ever-growing teeth.
