The Abalones belonging to the Haliotis genus exhibit a distinctive tear-shaped shell with a shimmering iridescent interior. Their mantles are adorned with numerous papillae. These fascinating creatures are primarily nocturnal, seeking shelter in rock crevices or coral during the day and emerging at night to forage. Using their specialized foot, they gracefully glide over the substrate and coral rubble. It's worth noting that their foot attaches firmly, so extreme caution must be exercised when attempting to remove them from glass or rocks.

In reef aquariums, Abalones play a beneficial role as they are avid consumers of algae. Their calcium-based shells offer protection against many predators, but to ensure proper growth, it is essential to maintain appropriate calcium levels in the water. Additionally, keeping nitrates at low levels and avoiding exposure to copper-based medications is crucial for their well-being.

While the Abalone's diet mainly consists of algae, providing supplementation in the form of dried seaweed, blanched lettuce, spinach, or Spirulina sheets/tablets can further support their nutritional needs. These graceful marine creatures can make an excellent addition to reef aquariums, contributing to the ecosystem by naturally controlling algae growth.
