The Turbo Snail is highly sought after by reef aquarium enthusiasts due to its remarkable ability to swiftly eliminate substantial amounts of troublesome algae. It exhibits a particular fondness for hair algae and will eagerly consume large quantities of it, as well as other forms of algae, from both live rock and the aquarium glass. Commonly referred to as the Turban or Top Shell Snail, Turbo fluctuosa features a thick, turban-shaped shell with an iridescent interior. This species is native to the Gulf of California along the Mexican coast.
As an excellent addition to the aquarium's cleanup crew, the Turbo Snail thrives in crevices and holes within natural reef environments. In a home aquarium, it requires an abundance of hiding places and ample grazing space. Some reef aquarists prefer to house the Turbo Snail in aquariums with securely arranged rockwork, as this active herbivore has a tendency to displace loose rocks in its quest for food.
To ensure the well-being of the peaceful Turbo Snail, it is important to avoid housing it with aggressive tankmates that could easily overpower this slow-moving creature. If the algae levels are insufficient, supplementing the snail's diet with dried seaweed is recommended. Additionally, maintaining adequate calcium levels is crucial to support the Turbo Snail's shell development, as it belongs to the Turbinidae family. Similar to other invertebrates, the Turbo Snail is highly sensitive to copper-based medications and elevated nitrate levels. When acclimating the Turbo Snail to its new environment, it is advisable to utilize the drip-acclimation method, as even minor fluctuations in water parameters can be detrimental to its well-being.
