The Gemmatum Tang, also referred to as the Gem Tang, is a highly sought-after and stunning fish with a black body and vibrant white spots, as well as a yellow tail and accents on its pectoral fins. This species is found in the Western Indian Ocean near Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, and the islands of Reunion and Mauritius, typically in deeper waters and surge zones, which makes it challenging to collect and drives up its price.
The Gem Tang is one of the most desirable Tangs for a reef aquarium due to its vibrant colors and is a great addition to a large fish-only tank or reef aquarium, provided that there is adequate lighting, space for free-swimming, and plenty of hiding spots. It is important to note that like other Tangs and Surgeonfish, the Gem Tang can be aggressive towards other fish with similar body shapes and conspecifics.
To maintain a healthy Gem Tang, it is important to offer plenty of marine-based seaweed and algae. A diet high in vegetation can boost the immune system, decrease aggression, and improve overall health. It is recommended to feed dried seaweed attached to a rock or a veggie clip, at least three times a week. Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, and Ocean Nutrition are all suitable options and easy to use.
