Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles)
Max Size: 8 1/2 inches
Diet: Herbivore
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatible: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons
The Achilles Tang, also known as the Red-tailed Surgeon or Achilles Surgeonfish, boasts a striking appearance with its dark brown to purple body color. Vibrant highlights of white and orange adorn the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins, while a white marking graces the gill covers. Notably, a captivating orange teardrop is present near the caudal fin. Juveniles of this species exhibit an orange streak by the tail, different from the teardrop shape seen in adults.
Providing a spacious environment is essential for the Achilles Tang, necessitating a 180-gallon aquarium or larger to accommodate its need for plenty of swimming room. These fish thrive in areas with strong water flow, mirroring their natural habitat in surge zones. When housed with other fish, the Achilles Tang showcases a peaceful demeanor, but it can be aggressive towards other Tangs and Surgeonfish.
While the Tangs will consume meaty foods alongside other aquarium fish, it is crucial to offer them an ample supply of marine-based seaweed and algae. This dietary addition strengthens their immune system, reduces aggression, and enhances overall health. Providing dried seaweed tied to a rock or using a veggie clip is recommended at least three times per week, in addition to their regular feeding schedule. Ideal products such as Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, and Ocean Nutrition make this process easy and effective.
