The Pincushion Urchin is characterized by its oval to round body adorned with hundreds of uniform spines, displaying colors that can range from red to purple, white, and blue.

To thrive in a home aquarium, the Pincushion Urchin requires ample hiding places and enough room to forage. During the day, it often seeks shelter in caves or may burrow into thick substrates. However, at night, it emerges to graze on algae, utilizing its suctorial podia aligned in five doubled rows for movement. It is essential to include a substantial amount of live rock in the aquarium, as this provides a grazing area for the Urchin and helps mimic its natural habitat. Additionally, be aware that the Pincushion Urchin may prey on some sessile invertebrates in the reef system. The stability of rock formations is crucial to withstand the Urchin's movement and wedging behavior in crevices.

Typically a solitary creature, the Pincushion Urchin can tolerate others of its kind if the tank size permits. However, it is sensitive to high levels of copper-based medications and cannot tolerate elevated nitrate levels. Poor water quality can lead to spine loss in the Urchin.

Breeding the Pincushion Urchin in an aquarium setting is exceptionally challenging, as there are no distinguishing characteristics to help differentiate between males and females.

To ensure its proper nutrition, if there is insufficient algae for grazing, the diet should be supplemented with dried seaweed.
