Christmas Wrasse (Halichoeres claudia)
Max Size: 5 inches
Diet: Carnivore
Temperament: Peaceful
Reef Compatible: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 50 gallons
The Christmas Wrasse from Fiji, also known as the Red-Lined or Biocellate Wrasse, stands out with its remarkable coloration. In particular, the female Biocellate Wrasse showcases distinct eye spots called ocelli on their dorsal fins. The males we offer display reddish stripes on a green/orange body, along with a U-shaped mark between the anal fin and the base of the caudal fin. However, they do not have ocelli in the dorsal fin.
To provide a suitable environment for the Christmas Wrasse, a 50-gallon or larger aquarium with a secure lid is recommended. The presence of a 2-3 inch sandy substrate allows them to find shelter when feeling frightened. It is advisable to include other peaceful wrasses in the tank, including individuals of the same species, as this helps create a harmonious environment.
The Christmas Wrasse actively consumes fireworms and pyramidellid snails, effectively protecting corals and clams. Additionally, it may feed on feather dusters, wild shrimp, tubeworms, and flatworms. Furthermore, it can serve as a cleaner fish, removing parasites from its tank mates. To meet its dietary requirements, the Christmas Wrasse should be offered a variety of foods. This includes vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp and brine shrimp, along with other meaty options. High-quality marine flakes and pellets are also suitable choices to ensure a balanced diet.
