The Green Wrasse, also known as the Pastel Green Wrasse or Green Coris, stands out as a striking fish with its attractive pastel green coloration. While it may lack the intricate patterns seen in other Halichoeres Wrasse, its vibrant green hues add a remarkable visual appeal to any marine aquarium. This active fish spends most of its time foraging for food, making it an engaging addition to the tank. The Green Wrasse is generally considered a peaceful species, making it suitable for community aquariums. However, larger and older individuals may exhibit aggression towards smaller, more passive fish, including other wrasses.
To create an ideal environment for the Green Wrasse, it's essential to set up a well-established saltwater aquarium of at least 75 gallons in size, fitted with a tight-fitting lid to prevent escapes. Aquascape the tank generously with live rock, providing numerous nooks and crannies for the Green Wrasse to explore, seek refuge, and forage for food. It is beneficial to include a significant open area of substrate and open swimming spaces. A sandy substrate layer about 2-3 inches deep is crucial, as it offers shelter for the Green Wrasse to burrow into during the night or when startled. Keeping the Green Wrasse with other peaceful wrasses, including members of its own species, is recommended.
In its natural habitat, the Green Wrasse primarily feeds on benthic invertebrates, which can include fireworms and pyramidellid snails. This makes them helpful in controlling such undesirable invertebrates in the aquarium. However, it's important to note that the Green Wrasse cannot distinguish between "undesirable" and "desirable" invertebrates, so caution should be exercised as they may prey on ornamental invertebrates like fan worms and shrimp. Generally, sessile invertebrates like soft and stony corals are safe from their predation.
To ensure the Green Wrasse's well-being in the home aquarium, provide a diverse diet consisting of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. High-quality marine flakes and marine pellet foods are also beneficial additions to their diet. Frequent small feedings throughout the day will suit the Green Wrasse's feeding habits.
By setting up an appropriate habitat and offering a varied diet, you can enjoy the captivating beauty and lively behavior of the Green Wrasse in your marine aquarium.
