The Yellow Wrasse, known by several names such as Golden Rainbowfish, Golden Wrasse, Yellow Coris, or Canary Wrasse, is a stunningly colorful marine fish that adds a delightful visual appeal and liveliness to any aquarium. Aquarists of all skill levels favor the Yellow Coris Wrasse due to its robustness and relatively compact size. Notably, juvenile and young female Yellow Coris Wrasse display multiple black spots on their fins, while mature adults have only one spot.

In its natural habitat, the Yellow Coris Wrasse is primarily found in the Eastern Indian Ocean, extending to the Western Pacific Ocean, including regions such as the Solomon Islands and as far north as Southern Japan and south to Rowley Shoals and the Australian coast of New South Wales. This species is often associated with reefs and can typically be spotted at the reef edge in sandy and rubble zones.

For an optimal setup, a well-established saltwater aquarium of at least 50 gallons is recommended for the Yellow Coris Wrasse, equipped with a secure, tight-fitting lid. To mimic a natural reef environment, it's advisable to create an aquascape using plenty of live rock, providing ample hiding spots and exploration areas for the wrasse. The addition of a large open substrate and open spaces for swimming is essential. A sandy substrate layer, about 2-3 inches deep, allows the Yellow Coris Wrasse to burrow into the sand during the evening or when feeling threatened. It is advisable to keep this species with other peaceful wrasses, including members of its own species.

In the wild, the Yellow Coris Wrasse primarily feeds on benthic invertebrates. It demonstrates a beneficial appetite for fireworms and pyramidellid snails, helping protect corals and clams from these undesirable invertebrates. However, it's worth noting that the Yellow Coris Wrasse may not differentiate between "undesirable" and "desirable" invertebrates in a home aquarium. Hence, it may consume ornamental invertebrates like fan worms, shrimp, and other crustaceans if given the opportunity. Nevertheless, sessile invertebrates such as soft or stony corals are typically not harmed by this species.

To ensure the well-being of the Yellow Coris Wrasse in captivity, a diverse diet is essential. It should consist of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. Additionally, high-quality marine flakes and marine pellet foods are beneficial for their nutritional needs. Providing frequent small feedings throughout the day will promote their health and vitality.
