Flagfin Angel (Apolemichthys trimaculatus)
Max Size: 10 inches
Diet: Omnivore
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatible: With Caution. May eat soft polyps
Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons
The Flagfin Angelfish, also known as the Threespot Angelfish, displays a stunning yellow body with blue lips, a dark blue-black dorsal spot where the head joins the body, and a light tan spot behind the eye.
To ensure the Flagfin Angelfish thrives, a 125-gallon tank or larger with plenty of hiding places should be provided, as this species tends to be quite shy initially. It is best to keep only one Flagfin Angelfish in the tank, as it can become territorial towards other angels. Additionally, it is not suitable for reef tanks as it is prone to nip at sessile invertebrates, such as soft and stony corals and clam mantles.
The Flagfin Angelfish can be challenging to keep as it requires a diet primarily consisting of sponges, which can be difficult to provide. However, expert aquarists may find success in feeding a mixed diet containing sponge-containing frozen angelfish rations, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, plenty of plant material, and live rock for grazing and hiding.
