Black Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus varius)
Max Size: 11 inches
Diet: Carnivore
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatible: No
Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons
The Bird Wrasse stands out with its distinct feature - an elongated beak, specially adapted to capture and secure long, slender prey, which it then breaks down into smaller, manageable pieces. Interestingly, the males display varying shades of green, earning them the nickname "Green Bird Wrasse," while the females sport a brownish-black coloration and are often referred to as the "Black" or "Brown Bird Wrasse."
Creating a suitable habitat for these fascinating creatures requires a spacious aquarium of at least 125 gallons, generously furnished with live rock. The live rock serves both as a source of food and as hiding spots for the Bird Wrasse. Additionally, since these wrasses are known to be jumpers, it is essential to have a tightly fitting lid on the tank to prevent any escape.
When introducing a pair of Bird Wrasse into the tank, it is advisable to add the female first. This can help establish a more harmonious dynamic between the two individuals.
As for their dietary needs, a well-balanced diet is crucial. Their meals should include vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp and frozen brine shrimp, along with other meaty foods. Supplementing their diet with high-quality marine flake and marine pellet food is also recommended to keep them healthy and thriving.
