Black Cardinalfish (Apogonichthyoides melas)
Max Size: 4.5 inches
Diet: Carnivore
Temperament: Peaceful
Reef Compatible: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
The Black Cardinalfish, native to the reefs of Indonesia, boasts a long and slender body and is predominantly black in color. Its large black eyes are accompanied by similarly sized spots on its fins.
For this slow and deliberate swimmer, a 30-gallon or larger aquarium with peaceful tankmates and a cave is recommended. It tends to seek refuge in sea grass or other plants and may use long-spined urchins for camouflage. In larger aquariums, a small group of Black Cardinalfish can coexist without aggression by establishing a strict hierarchy.
To maintain its health, the Black Cardinalfish requires a well-balanced diet consisting of meaty foods such as enriched brine shrimp, enriched mysis shrimp, flake foods, and smaller marine pellet food.
