Eclipse Hogfish (Bodianus mesothorax)
Max Size: 8 inches
Diet: Carnivore
Temperament: Aggressive
Reef Compatible: With Caution. May eat invertebrates
Minimum Tank Size: 90 gallons
The Coral Hogfish, also referred to as the Eclipse Hogfish or Mesothorax Hogfish, displays distinct coloration throughout its life stages. Juveniles showcase a burgundy body adorned with yellow spots, while adult specimens undergo a transformation. As they mature, the yellow spots disappear, giving way to a burgundy face followed by a rosy-yellow posterior, which is separated by a prominent black stripe.
In addition to its striking appearance, the Coral Hogfish serves as a beneficial cleaner for its tank mates, effectively removing parasites from their bodies. It is important to note that the Coral Hogfish should be housed in a fish-only tank with a capacity of 90 gallons or more. When placed in a reef environment, it may consider the resident corals as a source of food, posing a threat to the delicate reef ecosystem. Furthermore, it displays aggression towards smaller and more docile fish that are susceptible to bullying.
The adult Coral Hogfish has a diverse diet, consuming snails, worms, mussels, small fish, shrimp, and squid. This varied menu provides the necessary nutrients for its overall health and well-being.
