The Red Electric Flame Scallop, also known as the Electric Flame Scallop, boasts a vibrant red mantle with matching tentacles that appear to produce electricity, visible as lightning-like bolts. The Flame Scallops' shell is covered in tiny bumps, giving it a rough texture. It builds a small nest with bits of coral and rocks, which may not provide adequate protection in an aquarium. If threatened, it can escape by closing its valves together, assisted by its tentacles, propelling it through the water. It can tolerate other creatures as long as they don't attempt to eat it, making it possible to keep in groups.
This species is a filter feeder and requires micro-plankton to survive in an aquarium. It thrives in a mature reef aquarium system and needs appropriate calcium levels and alkalinity. Nitrates and copper-based medications are not tolerated. Feeding is essential, requiring supplementation with phytoplankton and organic foods like Marine Snow or Selcon dispensed individually with a small pipette/straw upstream of its location.
