The Flagfin Cardinalfish, also known as the Frostfin Cardinal, Nurseryfish, and Flagfin Cardinal, can be found in small schools. During the day, they shelter in the arms of feather stars, Diadema Sea Urchins, and around sponges, over soft-bottoms of sheltered bays and estuaries. At night, they disperse to feed on bottom-dwelling crustaceans, small fish, and zooplankton.
This species of fish has an interesting reproductive behavior, as males incubate their eggs inside their mouths. As the egg masses increase in size, the males will have their mouths wide open to aerate and shift the eggs around.
