The Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish, also known as the Hi Fin Perchlet, hails from the rubble zones of Cebu, making it a rare and sought-after find. It belongs to the Anthiinae subfamily, sharing similarities with various Anthias species. However, its resemblance to hawkfishes places it within the genus Plectranthias. Sporting an elongated body with a prominent high third dorsal spine followed by a banner-like flap, this fish showcases captivating mottled orange and white patterns, complemented by striking green eyes. Feeding primarily on zooplankton, the Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish makes a wonderful addition to a reef aquarium.
In its natural habitat, the Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish is often found among plate corals (Fungia sp.) in rubble zones of the reef. To thrive in captivity, they necessitate a saltwater aquarium of at least 20 gallons, furnished with ample live rock to provide hiding spots and a feeding environment. It is essential to be cautious when keeping them with other bottom-dwelling fish such as gobies and blennies, as they may display aggression.
To sustain the Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish's health and vibrancy, it is recommended to offer a diverse diet consisting of zooplankton and various meaty foods. Providing vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and small pieces of shrimp and fish will cater to their dietary needs and ensure their well-being in the aquarium setting.
