The Maculiceps Tang, also known as the Black Eared Tang and White Freckled Tang (Acanthurus maculiceps), is a fascinating marine fish that becomes even more captivating as it matures. During its juvenile stage, it showcases a beige body adorned with pale yellow spots. However, as it reaches adulthood, its appearance undergoes a transformation, and it dons a smoky brown body and fins with delightful yellow hues extending from the midline upwards. A distinct white vertical stripe adorns the base of its caudal fin. What truly sets this Tang apart are the vibrant spots on its face and forehead, reminiscent of freckles.

In temperament, the Maculiceps Tang is generally peaceful, but it is advisable to keep only one specimen per reef or fish-only aquarium, as it can become aggressive towards other members of its own species. To ensure its well-being, ample rockwork for shelter and ample swimming space are essential. Therefore, an aquarium of at least 250 gallons is recommended to accommodate the size of this Tang.

As a member of the Acanthurinae family, the Maculiceps Tang is an herbivore. While it may consume meaty foods along with other fish in the aquarium, it is crucial to provide it with an abundance of marine-based seaweed and algae. A diet rich in algae is essential for its overall health and longevity, and it should be regularly offered. High-quality flake and pellet foods are also accepted and can be incorporated into its diet. By providing a well-rounded and algae-focused diet, you can ensure the optimal health and vibrancy of this captivating marine fish.
