Reef Compatible: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons
The Red Serpent Starfish, scientifically known as Ophioderma squamoisissinum, possesses lengthy, serpent-like arms that enable swift movement for a starfish. Sporting a striking red coloration, these starfish serve as proficient scavengers, primarily feeding on decaying matter and plankton. If an appendage is lost, like most starfish, it has the ability to regenerate from the central disc. Typically, the Serpent Starfish prefers to inhabit live rockwork and is most active during nighttime. It is advisable to avoid housing them with feather dusters as they may consume them.
Providing ample hiding spots and sufficient space for movement in an aquarium ensures the well-being of this species. Although primarily nocturnal, the Red Serpent Starfish will gradually adapt to coming out during the day for feeding. It is essential to maintain stable oxygen levels, salinity, and pH in the water, as well as avoid copper-based medications, as this species is highly intolerant to sudden changes in these factors.
