Gold Rim / Whitecheek Tang (Acanthurus nigricans)
Max Size: 8 inches
Diet: Herbivore
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Reef Compatible: Yes
Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons
The Whitecheek Tang, also referred to as the Gold-rimmed Surgeonfish or Whitecheek Surgeonfish, showcases a body color ranging from black to purplish-blue. It possesses a small white mark on the cheek, situated between the mouth and eyes. The pectoral, anal, and dorsal fins exhibit a dark blue hue with blue highlights at the tips. The tail displays a combination of blue and a vertical yellow bar. Along the body, there is a distinctive wishbone-shaped marking formed by yellow striping, which extends against the anal and dorsal fins.
To accommodate the Whitecheek Tang, an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 125 gallons is recommended to provide ample space for swimming. It displays aggression towards other Tangs but maintains a peaceful demeanor when housed with other fish in the tank.
While the Whitecheek Tang consumes meaty foods alongside other fish in the aquarium, it is crucial to offer a substantial amount of marine-based seaweed and algae. This dietary inclusion strengthens their immune system, reduces aggression, and improves overall health. Feeding dried seaweed attached to a rock or using a veggie clip at least three times per week is advised. Products such as Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, and Ocean Nutrition are ideal options that are convenient to use.
