The Niger Triggerfish, also known as the Redtooth Trigger, is a visually striking fish that adds an impressive touch to any home aquarium. Its coloration varies from purple to blue/green and can even change day to day. The fins and long tail lobes have a lighter blue highlight, and as an adult, it develops bright red teeth, which are visible when it eats. The color temperature of the aquarium's lighting can also affect the fish's coloration.
This fish requires a 180-gallon or larger aquarium with plenty of rocks and caves for hiding. The Niger Triggerfish may rearrange the landscaping and rocks, and it communicates using a "grunting" sound. It is best suited for a more aggressive, fish-only display.
To maintain optimal health, the Niger Triggerfish should have a varied diet consisting of meaty foods such as squid, krill, clams, small fish, and hard-shelled shrimp. This will help to wear down its constantly growing teeth.
